VPS Hosting also allows companies to run test servers and to isolate new applications. Its a great test bed which takes little or no extra cost to run once the virtualization technology is in place.

Both Microsoft and VMware have come forward and made statements in favor of the evaluation criteria

Burton Group is the first technology analyst firm to arm customers with an in-depth list of criteria for evaluating virtualization software. This analysis shows the depth and breadth of Burton Group research expertise, and their ability to deliver substantial value to customers.” - Bogomil Balkansky, VP of Product Marketing, VMware

Interesting information and quite helpful to me. I had posted elsewhere concerning the differences between dedicated server and VPS server but now I find out there is also a semi-dedicated server!

@lord
How can you justify dedicated hosting over VPS. VPS is not a competitor to dedicated web hosting. Dedicated hosting has its own market.
VPS is for websites that have exceeded shared hosting limit but are yet no ready for dedicated hosting.
VPS starts from $5 whereas dedicated from $50

Selecting a Dedicated server is always better in comparison to the Semi-dedicated server or a VPS. The reason is the benefit that the Dedicated server has over a Semi-dedicated and a VPS. You will have the server Dedicated to you only so you will be able to utilize the resources according to you. Also, you will be able to customize the hardware on the server on your own by paying some additional charges. This makes a Dedicated server much better in comparison to a Semi-dedicated server and a VPS

@platima
I have been using for awhile Debian64 on a x3650 IBM server. It runs MySQL, Apache(PHP, APC, mod_rewrite) and a DNS server. I had no problems with this install. Lately I have been playing with CentOS which is considered to be more "enterprise friendly".

Personally I like more the Debian way of package management. Anyway I believe the most important question you need to ask yourself when choosing an OS is how it will fit in the already existing environment. Consistency is very important.
